H A P P Y L A N D at the E17 Art Trail, 2012.

Hello folks, as ever I am super late in posting this news but please do have a read of the information below! I have a solo exhibition on in Walthamstow (London, E17 9BN) from 1st-16th September, with a private view and wine tasting tomorrow, 29th August, from 5-8pm at the venue listed below.

All the information you need is below, and here’s a couple of sneak peaks from my exhibition:

“H A P P Y L A N D is a major solo exhibition by Walthamstow artist and illustrator Marie-Louise Plum. Circus themed, it includes illustrations on paper as well as more unconventional art objects. A vast collection of 3D objects, masks, appropriated images, pen & ink portraits and customised museum boxes stuffed full with broken, psychedelic toys stitch together the imaginary world of Happyland. Marie-Louise invites visitors to meet brain-eating slug-men, jolly, headless ballerinas and a schizophrenic jamboree of clown folk with dubious intentions.

Happyland exists in the cracks between dreams and nightmares. A place where north is south of upside down. Best viewed through a child’s eyes! Don’t be frightened, nothing is real.

Marie-Louise loves to create creepy characters and fantastical vignettes full of mischief and humour. She has worked on a varied range of projects including a large-scale wall piece for Forest Hall, Edinburgh, a custom made Moleskine design for Modofly and a wooden puzzle seen at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Her main interests are folk art, outsiders and freaks and she enjoys nothing more than creating nonsense and mess up in her attic room.”

Venue Details: Walthamstow Wine Club, 56-60 Grove Road, E17 9BN.
Opening times: 1st-16th September, Sat 10.00-17.00 (except 8th), Sun 11.00-16.00 (except 9th), Tue-Fri 14.00-20.00. Closed Mondays.

Artwork & Contact Information:
All artwork is for sale and is priced individually, prices available on request. If you are interested in pieces please ask the invigilator on duty at the exhibition, or email Marie-Louise directly.”

It’s nearly here folks!

Okay, so here is the third and most probably final lo-res (i.e. crap quality) sneak peak of what makes up Happyland. Next week I will reveal the brochure for Postcards Festival, the festival I am artist in residence at. Plenty circus, plenty freak, lots of fun and interesting things for you to get stuck into. So, remember to check back for all the details next week!

Blog mention on Paper Darts.

I got a neat little mention on Paper Darts blog recently. They were doing a feature on inventive styles of editorial illustration and decided to feature me alongside Johan Theeuwes and Beck Wheeler which was very kind of them indeed.

One good blog mention deserves another so I’d just like to point you in the direction of their website in the hope that you’ll order one of their lovely looking print magazines. Paper Darts is a literary arts magazine, and volume three promises to “remove the proverbial stick from the butt of the literary arts world and gives you more humor, more complex content, and more beautiful design than the other text block-dominated lit mags out there. Volume Three packs it all in and punches you in the face with an extra ‘zam-pow.’”

Got get ‘em tiger!

Inbox (12) – a fanzine in postcards.

Inbox (12)

Inbox (12)

I was recently asked to contribute to Inbox (12), a fanzine from Spain, consisting of 12 postcards drawn by 12 illustrators. The 12 postcards represent 12 city locations, all of them favourite spots of the 12 illustrators.

I contributed to the London edition, having lived in London for the last ten years. The other currently published city editions are Berlin and Madrid, but with New York and Tokyo also in the pipeline there’s plenty of amazing secret locations for you to discover.

I’d like to extend thanks to the makers of Inbox (12), especially since they have so diligently put together my very own profile on their site. The other illustrators involved in the London issue are all worth mentioning so please do visit the following:Brett Ryder, Chengsi Lu, Christina Christoforou, David Sparshott, Emily Spicer, Florian Meacci, Harriet Russell, Jo Cheung, Katey Jean, Kristopher Ho and Sandra Dieckmann.

If you’d like to see other illustrators favourite London spots buy a copy here(12).

From the Inbox (12) blog…

“A postcard is a trip invitation to visit spots we don´t know yet, to explore those we already know through the sender´s eyes, to imagine everything that is not told and could be happening at that place that someone is drawing for us…

Inbox (12) is a guide of the special spots in one city that a friend who knows the place would recommended to you… and they´re not always in the usual travel guides.

Inbox (12) is a sample of the work of a selection of the best illustrators related to each city all around the world.

Inbox (12) is a project that wants to recover the feeling of opening the mailbox and finding a bunch of beautiful postcards sent from a nice city waiting for you.

Inbox (12) is a fanzine for those who enjoy having a beautiful object between their hands.

Inbox (12) is a publication to collect and last in time…”

‘Beyond the Playground’ for GHS

Beyond The Playground

Beyond the Playground

I’m sometimes accused of being a liitle bit weirdy and a little bit creepy, so this piece of work for the Garden History Society is a non-creepy, non-weirdy, family friendly booklet to promote children’s play in historic gardens.

The booklet is a 16 page illustrated info-bible penned by Linden Groves on new approaches to children’s play and learning in historic gardens such as Tatton House and Wrest Park.
